They came to Venice in the 9th or 10th century (some mention 805), being originally from Koper.
Tassini states that already in 1050 they participated in the Great Council, although Andrea Da Mosto finds the first attestation of it at the end of the thirteenth century; in any case, they remained in the noble body even after the lock-out of 1297.
Among the most famous members, Paolo, bailo di Negroponte killed in 1470 at the end of the Turkish siege of the island (according to legend he was sawn in two); Sebastiano, a man of letters (1525-1585); Francesco (1566-1646), doge from 1631 to his death.
The Erizzo became extinct in 1847 with the death of Guido di Niccolò, author of a Memoria sui veneti fiumi. The surname was continued by the great-grandson Francesco Miniscalchi Erizzo, son of Luigi Miniscalchi and Marianna di Andrea Erizzo.
The family gave its name to several Venetian towns: a branch, a calle and a Erizzo court are located near the Erizzo alla Maddalena palace; a bridge and a calle Erizzo, which are added a calle and a sotoportedrio Erizzo, are located around the Palazzo Erizzo di San Martino; finally, in San Francesco della Vigna there is a calle Erizzo or de le Bele Done, so called because some houses of the family overlooked.
