The glass aventurine

is a particular work invented in Venice on the island of Murano in the first half of the seventeenth century (about 1620).

It is a translucent crystalline paste, inside which are dipped straws or copper crystals with shiny metallic oxides, which create an effect that imitates that of aventurine quartz.

The procedure provides for the addition, at the end of the fusion, and on several occasions, of a certain quantity of iron, silicon metal or coal beating, all reducing raw materials. The metallic copper begins to precipitate, and at the end of a few hours of cooling this is completely separated from the basic glass, dispersing homogeneously in minute crystals, which in the best cases reach the millimeter in size. It is therefore the presence of copper deposits that tends to give the material a reddish brown shimmer with golden reflections.

Aventurine is often used as a thick decorative element on flat or hollow surfaces, both in glass objects and as a complement to metal working (jewelry, furniture). Due to its metallic sheen, it was once called “stellaria
