The Mercerie are the main commercial artery of the city of Venice. They are located in the San Marco district and connect Piazza San Marco to the Rialto area through a system of calli.
The Mercerie are the core of the business of the lagoon city since the earliest times of the Republic of Venice when they sold the precious goods arrived in port from distant markets. Once, the shops of canvases and fine fabrics were open all night. Along the route of the Mercerie and in the immediate surroundings the ground floor of all the buildings on both sides is occupied almost exclusively by shops that follow each other with continuity.

At the beginning of the Mercerie dell’Orologio you can see at the first floor a small bas-relief depicting a woman who drops a pestle. The image recalls the episode linked to the failure of the revolt led by Bajamonte Tiepolo, which occurred in the fourteenth century. The insurgents were heading towards St Mark’s Square to storm the Doge’s Palace when a woman who was watching the scene from the window of her home slipped the stone pestle with which she was working.

The machine hit the head of the chief of the rioters, killing him instantly and causing the end of the riot. The Signoria della Repubblica therefore decreed for the woman the perpetual exemption from the payment of the rent, as a sign of gratitude for the escaped danger.
